2200, July 27 Update

Kaname Sakurai and Dosan Mravlje continue to eat up the field. Kaname had a 2 minute lead over Kruglikov at Stove Pipe and 15 minute lead at Panamint! Kaname, a long time competitive triathlete and swimming coach, completed the Furnace Creek 508 Bicycle Race in 1994. Since then he has completed the Race Across America (RAAM) Bicycle Race 5 times. In 1998 he completed his first 100 miler, the Angeles Crest 100.

Dusan is one of Europe's top ultra runners and has won many races. The Europeans other than the Russians, consider him the pre-race favorite.

The 3 Americans racing as a team against the Russian trio, Lisa Smith, Jay Batchen, and Steven Silver, are holding their own pace two hours back. Their experience in the race tells them to start conservatively and traverse Death Valley in good shape, then pick up the pace later on. They have not conceded victory to the Russians in any way.

On a humorous note, one "theory" regarding Kruglikov's phenomenal performance is that there are twin Kruglikovs secretly switching off in a relay!

High temperature today was 122 F/50C.

Some Time Station 3 times have been posted.
