1000, July 27 Update

1000, July 27, the Third Wave of 15 Runners Began in 100 degree temperatures. Whereas the 6am and 10am grouops began in the shade thrown across the eastern valley floor by the mountains, the 10am group began under the fierce desert sun. This group was the most "laid-back" of the three, arriving mostly less than 30 minutes before the race start. We shot the obligatory photos in front of the Badwater sign, then at the start line on the highway. Many countries were represented in this group, including Japan, France, Slovenia, Germany, and England. A German TV crew for the network SAT1 was on hand to document the experience of Joey Kelly, a member of the Kelly Family singing group.

Tim Hewitt quickly went off the front as the race began Many wondered if he was trying to catch the 8am group before they reached Furnace Creek. Margaret Schlundt and Stanley Duobinis, a married couple and the only such "team" in the race, were making a comfortable pace in the middle of the field. Uli Weber and Eberhard Frixe of Germany were running stride for stride together as well. It's going to be a long day for everyone out there, regardless of when they stated the race.
